Steve Lavin was named head coach of the University of San Diego men’s basketball team in April 2022.
Lavin has been associated with college athletics for more than 30 years, having previously served as head coach at St. John’s and UCLA and as a broadcaster with FOX Sports, ESPN and ABC. At St. John’s from 2010 to 2015, he led the Red Storm to 20 or more wins on three occasions, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2015. He missed the 2011-2012 season while recovering from cancer treatment.
As head coach at UCLA from 1996 to 2003, Lavin led the Bruins to six seasons with 21 or more wins and six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1997-2002). He guided the team to five regional semifinals in a six-year span and signed two top-ranked recruiting classes.
In 12 years as a head coach, Lavin led teams to 10 postseason appearances, including eight NCAA Tournament berths, and nine seasons of 20 or more wins. In addition, 16 of his student-athletes were drafted into the NBA.
Between his coaching stints at UCLA and St. John’s, Lavin was a college basketball and NBA Draft analyst for ESPN/ABC from 2003 to 2010. After leaving St. John’s in 2015, he joined FOX Sports in a similar role. He also served as a college basketball analyst for Westwood One radio
Lavin has been highly involved with both Coaches vs. Cancer, a foundation that he has raised more than $1.5 million for since 2010, and The V Foundation for Cancer Research, for which he has participated in numerous fundraising and awareness events. Lavin is part of The V Foundation President’s Club, contributing more than $50,000 to the organization. He was presented the Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award in 2014, an annual honor awarded to a coach who has engaged vigorously in the Coaches vs. Cancer program’s fundraising, education and promotional initiatives.
In the summer of 2022, Lavin was awarded the Michelle Carew Spirit Award presented by the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, in recognition of champions in the fight against cancer.
