John Means is a starting left-handed pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. Selected in the 46th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves, Means shortly after suffered an injury and was advised to play at the junior college level. He eventually transferred to West Virginia University where he played for the Mountaineers. Means was once again drafted in the 11th round of the 2014 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
Means was promoted to the major leagues on September 24, 2018, and soon thereafter selected to be in the Orioles’ starting rotation. In 2019, Means was chosen to pitch on the American League team for the MLB All-Star Game. He was runner-up in the AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 and was named the Opening Day starting pitcher in 2021. On May 5, 2021, Means made history by throwing a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners. This marked the first no-hitter for the Orioles organization since 1991. Off the field, John enjoys spending time with his wife and former professional soccer player, Caroline, and their son, McCoy.
