A proud Baton Rouge native and 3x Olympic gold medalist, Seimone Augustus has one of the most inspiring stories in sports and holds a spot as one of the WNBA’s Top 20 Players of All Time. During her collegiate career at LSU, the 2x All-American won the Naismith College Player of the Year, Wooden Award and Wade Trophy in 2005 and 2006 while leading the LSU Lady Tigers to three straight Final Four appearances. Her uniform number (33) was retired by LSU in January 2010, making her the first woman in school history to receive that honor. In 2023, her statue was erected outside the Maravich Center. The following year, Seimone was officially inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
In 2006, Seimone was drafted No. 1 overall to the Minnesota Lynx and dominated throughout her inaugural season, earning WNBA Rookie of the Year. She played several overseas seasons for championship teams in Turkey and Russia; in the WNBA, Seimone led one of the greatest team dynasties the league has ever seen. She retired as a 4x WNBA Champion, WNBA Finals MVP, 4x All-WNBA, 8x WNBA All-Star, and only the second woman ever to be named The Star Tribune‘s Sportsperson of the Year. Seimone was recognized as a member of the WNBA’s 20th and 25th Anniversary Teams, solidifying her as one of the greatest players of all time. She is a 3x Olympic gold medalist and helped lead team USA to gold in both the FIBA World Cup as well as the FIBA Americas Championship.
One of the most lethal scorers in the history of women’s basketball, her crossover became legendary, and her midrange game was second to none. Armed with the enviable ability to remain true to her family-oriented roots while testing the status quo, Augustus led a revolution in authenticity, setting an early pace for the league’s style and swag through her sneakerhead identity, retro jersey collection and commitment to curated, genderless fashion that sees no boundaries.
Augustus continues to lead in women’s basketball as a coach, consultant, and author. After immediately stepping into an assistant coach role with the Los Angeles Sparks, she transitioned to a position with Athletes Unlimited and is a consultant for Overtime. Augustus also uplifts women’s achievements in sports through storytelling as co-author of Hoop Muses, a vibrant book on the history of women’s basketball and pop culture.
