Miguel Lozano is a professional freediver, specializing in depth modalities. He was proclaimed Double World Runner-up in two of the three depth disciplines (Constant Weight without fins and Free Immersion) at the AIDA World Depth Championship in Cyprus in 2015. On May 30, 2016, he submerged to -122 meters in Free Immersion during the Caribbean Cup championship in Roatán (Honduras), a feat that currently places him as the fourth deepest person in the world in this discipline, just five meters from the current World Record (-127m). He also was the first Spaniard to reach the -100m mark in the constant weight modality (flipping) and -83m without fins.
In 2012 in the Bahamas, 2016 in Bali and 2017 in Honduras, Miguel made three World Record attempts, descending to -122m, -123m, and -125m respectively. The fight for the World Record between William Trubridge, Miguel Lozano, and Alexey Molchanov has intensified, and the freedivers continue to try to impose and improve their marks.
Miguel was born in Montgat, in Barcelona, in 1979, next to the Mediterranean Sea, so the sea marked his sports career from a very young age. A fan of diving, spearfishing, and swimming, he practiced all disciplines until he had a first encounter with sport freediving, a moment that would definitively change his life.
At 1.96 meters tall, weighing 88 kilos, and with a lung capacity of 10 liters, Miguel possessed innate qualities for practicing freediving at the highest level. These traits allowed him to adapt in record time to the demanding conditions of this sport’s discipline and to repeatedly overcome challenges in its practice. To gain experience and perfect his style, Miguel has dived on beaches around the world – from Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, and the Caribbean to living in two of the meccas of deep Apnea, Dahab in Egypt and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There, he has trained and shared experiences with some of the most consecrated names in Apnea, such as the world record holder, Italian Umberto Pelizzari, from whom he has adopted much of his technique and philosophy.
With Apnea as a modus vivendi, Miguel is an Apnea Instructor for the four organizations (AIDA/SSI/AA/CMAS) that direct both training and the organization of events and international Apnea competitions. He is the only Spanish instructor trainer of the international organizations AIDA and SSI. He is also part of the staff of international instructors of Umberto Pelizzari and his school Apnea Academy.
Lozano focuses all his effort on continuing to surpass goals and improve as a freediver. The Spanish athlete continues to take full advantage of all his physical and mental potential, fighting to continue in the world elite of a sport as complex as Apnea.
